In a strategic move to fortify its position in the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem, cloud observability leader Datadog has acquired Boston-based AI data startup Metaplane. The acquisition underscores Datadog’s broader ambition to streamline data reliability across modern AI infrastructures.
Elevating Data Teams with AI Observability
Datadog, known for its robust SaaS-based observability and cloud security platform, aims to unify data observability with application monitoring to address the growing complexity of AI-driven business operations.
“Observability is no longer a concern exclusive to IT or DevOps,” said Michael Whetten, Vice President of Product at Datadog. “As businesses embrace AI, ensuring reliable, high-quality data is critical—and it’s now a day-to-day responsibility for data teams.”
By integrating Metaplane’s technology, Datadog plans to provide customers with tools that do more than just surface metrics—they’ll deliver actionable insights, helping data teams preempt issues and drive smarter decision-making across the organization.
The Metaplane Advantage
Founded in 2020, Metaplane has built an end-to-end data observability platform powered by machine learning. Its suite of tools includes anomaly detection, automated data quality monitoring, and column-level lineage—capabilities specifically designed to detect and resolve data issues in real time.
The platform’s models are primarily trained on historical metadata, allowing it to proactively identify irregularities and help businesses maintain trust in their data assets.
With over $22 million in venture backing, Metaplane has established itself as a go-to provider for enterprises seeking to safeguard their data pipelines. Now, under the Datadog umbrella, the startup—rebranded as Metaplane by Datadog—will continue supporting existing clients while scaling its reach to new customers worldwide.
Bridging the Gap Between Data and Software Teams
Kevin Hu, CEO and co-founder of Metaplane, emphasized the cultural and technological synergy behind the deal. “This partnership allows us to bring our mission of trustworthy data to thousands more organizations,” Hu said. “It also fosters greater collaboration between data and software teams—something we see as fundamental to building reliable AI systems.”
While the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, the strategic intent is clear: Datadog is building a unified foundation for observability that supports both software performance and data integrity.
Datadog’s Global Expansion
The acquisition follows Datadog’s announcement of its first Australian data center earlier this month, signaling an ongoing commitment to global expansion and localized service delivery. With operational hubs already established across North America, Asia, and Europe, the new facility aims to support customers in the Asia-Pacific region with faster performance and enhanced data compliance.
As enterprises deepen their investment in AI, partnerships like this signal a shift toward more integrated, intelligent observability—where infrastructure, application, and data health are viewed through a single, actionable lens.
